Alice Louise Engkvist, 93, of Maddock, ND passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the Maddock Memorial Home. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the North Viking Lutheran Church with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Vasa Lutheran Cemetery in rural Esmond, ND. Music will be provided by Paula Duren, Katie Palacios and Marta Smith.

Alice Louise Hofstad was born July 1, 1925 on a farm near Ambrose, ND, Divide County. Her parents were Bjarne and Aasta (Ryan) Hofstad. Her mother and father immigrated from Norway in the early 1900s. Alice grew up on a farm south of Ambrose and attended Roseville Grade School. She graduated from Crosby High School in 1944 and graduated from Minot State Teacher's College with a standard teaching certificate.

Alice taught in Tatman Twp. in Ward County for two years and Plummer School in Divide County for one year. For three years, she worked as a fieldworker with the educational department for the North Dakota Farmers Union, serving several counties in the Rugby area. Alice also taught one year at Isabel School in Benson County. On October 5, 1952, Alice was united in marriage to Douglas C. Engkvist at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ambrose, across the field from her parents' home. The couple established their home on the Engkvist farm. They were blessed with four children: Diane, Nancy, Sharon and Robert.

Alice was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Esmond where she served in various official capacities for the church, Sunday school and WELCA. She was involved in the activities of the Mollargutten Sons of Norway, Progressive Homemakers, Maddock 55 Club and volunteered for the Senior Meals on Wheels Program. Alice enjoyed quilting, reading, gardening and painting. Her favorite pastime was spent visiting with her children and grandson.

Alice is survived by her children, Diane Engkvist of Port Angeles, WA, Nancy Engkvist of Sequim, WA, Shari (John) Matusiak of Denver, CO and Robert (Sherri) Engkvist of Esmond, ND; grandson, Gannon Engkvist; sisters, Mildred Ingebo, Vivian Abrahamson, and Bernice Knutson; sister-in-law, Eillen Simonson; honorary granddaughters, Nikita Wright and Natalia Heck.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Douglas C. Engkvist; parents, Bjarne and Aasta (Ryan) Hofstad.
