Obituary

Arlene Gloria (Holey) Lien, 90, of Rugby, ND and formerly of Minnewaukan, ND passed away at the White Pines Senior Living in Blaine, MN on Saturday, January 21, 2017. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday January, 28, 2017 at the Trinity Free Lutheran Church with Pastor Luther 'Lu' Mathison officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Trinity Free Lutheran Cemetery in Minnewaukan, ND in the spring. Music will be provided by Sid Bingaman, Claudette Carlson and Jim Swanson. Pall Bearers will be Ryan Leitschuh, Mark Hinkel, Jim Swanson, Gregg Smith, Jim Olson, Myron Jury, Tim Brenno, Ryder Crotteau and Blake Crotteau.

Arlene was born May 16, 1926 to Henry and Anna Louise (Hanson) Holey in South Viking Township, Benson County, ND. She was baptized in the Viking Lutheran Church in rural Maddock and confirmed at the Stony Lake Church in rural Minnewaukan. Arlene attended country school through the eighth grade. She started high school in Maddock and graduated from BCATS in May 1945. Arlene married Walter Lien on July 15, 1950 and lived their entire life together in Minnewaukan. In 2011 she moved to Sterling House in Blaine, MN for a few months and since then had resided at Haaland Estates in Rugby, ND. Five days before her death, she had moved to White Pine Senior Living in Blaine, MN.

Arlene worded at the Benson County Courthouse for many years. She first was the clerk in the Register of Deeds office and then was a secretary in the law office of M.C. Hiaasen for 18 years. She returned to the Courthouse as Deputy Register of Deeds until her retirement in 1994. Arlene was a charter member of Trinity Free Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan where she was Secretary/Treasurer of the Sunday school for a time. She was also secretary of the WMF for several terms. She was a member of the Minnewaukan Community Club and was a very proud 61 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as secretary for many years and as President during her last years. Arlene was, at present, a life member of the Auxiliary. She also worked on the election board for a number of years and assisted with driving Meals on Wheels.

Arlene enjoyed doing handiwork for many years and did a lot of reading. She was a diehard Fighting Sioux hockey fan and watched games on TV whenever she had a chance. She was ecstatic when they won their 8th Division 1 National Championship last winter.

Arlene is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia Lien of Rugby, ND and Judith (Mark) Hinkel of Blaine, MN; two grandchildren, Ryan (Courtney) Leitschuh of Minneapolis, MN and Heidi Crotteau of Andover, MN; two great grandsons, Ryder and Blake Crotteau of Andover, MN; one sister-in-law, Patricia Lien; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her parents; a brother, Hersel; sister-in-law, Phyllis Holey; nephew, Harlan Holey; her in-laws, Torsten and Ragna Lien; brothers and sister-in-law's, Norma and Eddie Swanson, Agnes and Jim Blackmore, Ray and Betty Lien, Carl Lien and Gladys and Bill Moore.
