Art Duren, 90, of Maddock ND and most recently a resident at the Maddock Memorial Home, passed away Wednesday August 19, 2015 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, ND surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, August 24, 2015 at 11:00 am at the St Williams Catholic Church in Maddock ND with Fr Brian Bachmeir celebrating the mass. Burial will be held in the St James Catholic Cemetery in Minnewaukan ND. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00-5:00 pm at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock ND and after 6:00 pm in the church where there will be a 7:00pm Parish Vigil and Rosary. Casket bearers will be all of Art's grandchildren. Military Rites will be provided by the Theodore A. Togstad Post # 123 Maddock American Legion and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.

Arthur "Art" Duren was born in Neilsville, WI on December 9, 1924 to William and Nora (Keller) Duren. Art was drafted into the United States Navy on March 3, 1944 and was honorably discharged June 8, 1946. During his time of service, Art had received the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. On April 24, 1948 he married Marjorie E. Zwack at the St Anthony's Catholic Church in Fargo, ND.

Art owned and operated bakeries in Wolf Point MT, Towner and Leeds ND before being persuaded to relocate to Maddock. Art owned and operated City Bakery in Maddock for over 50 years. He always said "I have a lot of dough, just the wrong color!"

He enjoyed reading, refinishing furniture, gardening, cooking, and an occasional scotch or a beer with his boys, but his greatest pride and joy was spending time with his family and looked forward to the family gatherings at his house.  He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, owning stock in the team and attending several games at Lambeau Field.

Art was a volunteer fireman for several years. He served on the Credit Union board, St Williams Parish Council, Maddock Commercial Club and was a member of the Elk's Club. Art was a member of the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post which recently honored him at the Memorial Day services for his 60 year membership.  In 2009 Art was grateful to be included in the WWII Honor Flight to Washington DC to view the WWII Memorial.

He is survived by his children: Mary Hermanson of Rugby ND; Chris (Tom) Cahill of Rolla ND; Gerry (Paula) Duren of Maddock ND; Mike Duren of Maddock ND; Jan Duren (Michaella Esters) of Omaha NE; Jeanine (Joe) Zeamer of DePere, WI and Margaret (Dave) Emanuel of Crookston MN; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; siblings: Vernon Duren, Irene Ling and Margie Blackbird all from the
Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

Art was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie; his parents, William and Nora Duren; a son, Peter William Duren, a daughter, Julie Therese Duren and siblings Marie, Valieta, Alice, Clarence and Ed.
