Arthur R. Johnson, 87, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of rural Esmond, ND, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 16th, 2010, 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Esmond, with Pastor Harold Ovre officiating. Burial will be in the Vasa Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond. Visitation will be Saturday at the church an hour before the funeral. Military Rites will be accorded by the Esmond VFW Post #4251 and the Military Honors Unit of Devils Lake. Casket bearers will be: Cullen Johnson, Tyrone Johnson, Brent Olson, Alan Olson, Bruce Georgeson, Robert Engkvist and Brock Georgeson. Honorary bearers will be: Clifford Johnson, Milton Erickson, Kenneth Erickson and Reuben Smith. Music for the service will be from Pastor Harold Ovre, soloist with Karen Smith, pianist.
Arthur Reinhold Johnson was born November 1, 1922 on the family farm in Isabel Township, rural Esmond, ND, to Otto and Hannah (Paulson) Johnson. He was raised there, attended the Isabel School and worked for Palmer Woyen before enlisting in the US Army on November 3, 1945. Arthur served in Germany until being discharged December 19, 1946. He returned home and along with his brother, Leonard, operated the family farm until retiring in 2000. They moved to Devils Lake in October of 2009. Arthur became a resident at the Good Samaritan Center on October 4th of this year.
Arthur was baptized and confirmed at the Vasa Lutheran Church, rural Esmond. Upon its closure, he became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Esmond VFW Post #4251.
Surviving are a brother: Leonard of Devils Lake; nieces: Lynda (Mike) Schmaltz of West Fargo, Charolette (David) Peterson of Longview, WA, Bonnie Olson of Harlow and Roxann (Bruce) Georgeson of Maddock; nephews: Cullen (Doreen) Johnson and Tyrone (Nancy) Johnson all of Fargo; several grandnieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Clarence, Albert, Harold and Donald; and sisters: Leona and Lillian.
