David "Red" Lohnes Sr. "Hokfina Cistina" (Little Boy), 83, of St. Michael, ND and of the Spirit Lake Nation, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Devils Lake, ND. Wake for David will begin at 5:30 PM Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Tekakwitha Center in St. Michael, ND with a Rosary and Prayer Service beginning at 6:00 pm. The procession to St. Michael will leave from the City Plaza (Old Walmart) on Friday at 5:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the St. Michael Catholic Church with Fr. Paul Schuster celebrating. Burial will take place at the St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in the spring. The Nelson Funeral Home of Maddock was in charge of arrangements.
David "Red" Lohnes was born March 10, 1934 to Aaron Oscar Lohnes of Ft. Totten, ND and Florence (Morin) Lohnes of Canada. He attended the St. Michael Indian Boarding School and later received his GED. Dave enlisted into the United States Army on October 24, 1955 and served in the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged from the military on October 23, 1957. Upon his return home, David was an entrepreneur and owned a boxing and sportswear business at a young age.
Dave was employed as a tribal judge within the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe in Ft. Totten from 1973-1975. Dave was united in marriage to Jeannie Davis on August 18, 1978 in Minnewaukan, ND. He then was also employed as an Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselor for many years. Dave loved hunting, fishing and horseback riding, horse auctions, rummage sales, Cadillac's, playing slot machines at the casino (Sizzling 7's) and old time country music. He was also a foster parent for 50 years, a boxing coach and a little league baseball coach.
Dave is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Jeannie (Davis) Lohnes of St. Michael, ND; sister, Elizabeth Lohnes LaCroix of Veblen, SD; mother-in-law, Florence Davis of Belcourt, ND; sons, David Lohnes Jr. of Devils Lake, ND, Douglas (Anita) Lohnes of Devils Lake, ND, Daniel (Ruby) Lohnes of St. Michael, ND, Dana (Loren) Lohnes of Devils Lake, ND, Erik Lohnes of St. Michael, ND; daughters, Pam Lohnes of Devils Lake, ND and Lisa (Vincent) Romero of Albuquerque, NM; 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Derrick Lohnes; parents, Aaron and Florence (Morin) Lohnes; grandson, Adrian Lohnes; brothers, Eugene, Roger, Edward and Paul Lohnes; sisters, Lilly Hunt, Margaret Iron Heart and Theresa Zurtuche; father-in-law, Elmer Davis Sr.
