Donna L. Rice, 84, of Maddock, ND, passed away on Sunday, March, 8, 2020 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 13, 2020 at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 PM prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Viking Lutheran Cemetery in rural Maddock. Music will be provided by Rachel Markestad. Donna was born on March 14, 1935, the first born to Alvin and Ruth Nelson on the family farm in SV Township. She was baptized and confirmed at the Viking Lutheran Church. Donna graduated in 1953 from BCATS in Maddock and in 1956 from Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in Minot. On August 28, 1958, Donna was united in marriage to Gerald Rice in Williston, ND.

Donna began her nursing career working at the Maddock Memorial Hospital and Williston Hospital as a staff nurse. Later, she was employed by Benson County as their public health nurse. During this time, Donna co-implemented the Homemaker Home Health program.

Donna was active in community organizations, especially the American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as the State President from 2000-2001. Her slogan was "Light the Way with Service." Donna served as assistant librarian for many years, deputy auditor for the city of Maddock for six years and on the Maddock City Council for 14 years. She also served on the Benson County Housing Board and Maddock Memorial Home Board.

Donna was an avid sports fan, especially Sioux hockey and Twins baseball.

Donna is survived by her four children, Anna (Jim) Olson of Fargo, ND, Ellen (Lynn) Nilson of Fargo, ND, David (Sara) Rice of Bismarck, ND and Donnie (Alysa) Rice of Esmond, ND; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sandra (Dale) Olson of Maddock, ND and Marsha (Irv) Smith of Bismarck, ND; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Rice; parents, Alvin and Ruth Nelson; sister, Alva Stoa; brother, Loren Nelson.
