Dorothy Helen (Weiss) Nord died Tuesday evening January 6th, 2009, at her home in Minnewaukan, ND at the age of 86, surrounded her five children and other family members. Funeral services will be Friday, January 9, 2009,  10:30 AM  at Zion Lutheran Church in Churchs Ferry with Pastors Kevin Kaufmann and Mindy Meier officiating.  Burial will be later in the spring in the Churchs Ferry Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7pm, with a 7pm Prayer service at the Nelson Funeral Home in Minnewaukan.  Casket bearers will be:  Chad Arendt,  Eric Nord, Chris Nord,  Ryan Schmuhl,  Travis Sten, Joe Cote`, Shane Buff,  Mark Udvig,  Garret Karels,  Jason Slaughter and Marshall Keeling. Honorary will be the members of the Irvine Friendship Club and their spouses.  Music will be from Rebecca Cote`, soloist with Doris Michaels, organist.

Dorothy Helen Nord was born April 1, 1922, in Grand Forks, ND, the first child of Fred and Hazel (Martin) Weiss, of Doyon, ND.  She  raised  in the Doyon and Webster areas and later moved to Devils Lake, where she graduated from Devils Lake Central High School in 1939.

She married Oscar Nord, of Churchs Ferry, ND, on February 14, 1942. They lived in Devils Lake, ND, and Pomona, CA, then farmed together near Churchs Ferry from 1948 until his death in 1977. Dorothy was active in the Churchs Ferry community, in both the Churchs Ferry Methodist Church and the Zion Lutheran Church, the Irvine Homemakers Club, and Benson County 4-H leadership. She was active, along with her husband, in Farm Bureau and the Republican Party.

In 1981, she updated her secretarial skills at Little Hoop Community College and moved to Minnewaukan, where she worked in the Benson County social services office until her retirement in 2003. She attended the First Presbyterian Church of Minnewaukan.

She is survived by five children, Gary (Maria) Nord, of Toelle, Utah, Mark (Judith) Nord, of Hyattsville, Maryland, Patricia (Dan) Vickerman, of Stillwater, Minnesota, Nancy (Larry) Arendt, of New Rockford, North Dakota, and Allan (Cathy Lobrick) Nord, of Minnewaukan, 12 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Helen Weiss, husband, Oscar Nord, sister by adoption, Flora, and brother, Floyd Weiss.
