Obituary

Florence L. Johnson, 91, formerly of rural Esmond and Maddock, ND, died Sunday, October 2, 2011, at the Heart of America Medical Center Long Term Care in Rugby, ND.  Funeral services will be Friday, October 7, 2011,  11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Esmond, ND with Pastor Harold Ovre officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Casket bearers will be her grandsons:  Dirk & Rick Bergsgaard,  Kyle Bjornstad,  Jason & Jory Head,  Caleb Johnson,  Chuck & Robert Johnson,  Dion Johnson,  Derrick Nelsen and Alan & Todd Ness.  Honorary bearers will be her granddaughters:  Tracy Ann Taylor,  Kristyn Lafferty,  Kallie Cook,  Dena Daws,  Kari Nelsen,  Stephanie Ott,  Nicki Head,  Jenae Johnson,  Sharri Doepke and Ann Vaagen.  Music will be from Judy Possen,  Peggy Lindstrom,  Patty Altringer,  Roger & Karen Hill and Margaret Toso.  Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm Thursday, with a 6:30pm Prayer Service at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock.

Florence Luella Olson was born on July 19, 1920 on the family farm in Wells County, near Heimdal, to Thorvald and Betsy (Fossen) Olson.  She was raised there and also in Isabel Township, near Esmond.  Florence attended the Isabel School.  At a very young age, she worked for threshing crews as a cook and babysat for her neighbors twins.  Florence married Norris B. Johnson on December 20, 1940, in Esmond.  The couple lived on the Johnson farm for over 61 years.  Norris passed away June 3, 2002.  Florence then moved into Maddock.  On July 19th of this year, she was hospitalized in Rugby and became a resident of the Heart of America Medical Center.

Florence enjoyed reading magazines, crocheting, quilting, cooking, baking, playing cards, bingo and music. She played the piano by ear.  Florence especially enjoyed her family,  visiting with friends and neighbors.  Lunch was always on at the Johnson's.

Florence is survived by 5 sons:  Merwyn (Barbara) Johnson of Cando,  Glen (Judy) Johnson of Jamestown, ND,  Darrell (Elvina Engstrom) Johnson of Leeds,  Jerry (Bonnie) Johnson of Esmond and Lanny Johnson of Baker;  5 daughters:  Betty (Marlo) Bergsgaard of Finley, ND,  Noreen (Bill) Wright of Spanaway, WA,  Kathy (Dave) Bjornstad of Grand Forks,  Deanna Head and companion, Darrel Gotvaslee of Norwich, ND and Lori (Doran) Nelsen of Surrey, ND;  22 grandchildren,  39 great-grandchildren;  6 great-great-grandchildren; and  2 sisters:  Joy Sylling of Sheyenne, ND and Alice Lee of Renton, WA.

She was preceded in death by her parents;  husband;  4 grandchildren:  Robbie Ness,  Jerad & Jeremiah Johnson and an infant grandson;  a great-grandson:  Chase Cadwell;  4 sisters:  Tillie Toso,  Twyla Olson,  Doris Blomster and  Dallas Hillestad; 2 brothers:  Edwin Olson &  Stanton Olson;  a son-in-law:  Gary Ness and a daughter-in-law:  Lois Johnson.

I will miss her smile, laughter and her wonderful sense of humor! I will never be able to hear a polka without thinking of her playing piano and singing along.
