Freddie Julian Jacobson was born to Hilmar and Anna (Ellingson) Jacobson on December 8th, 1921, on the family farm in Albert Township, rural Maddock, ND.  He was baptized and confirmed at Albert Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Maddock.  Fred attended the Albert Township School through the eight grade,  Harlow High School for three years and graduated from the Benson County Agricultural and Training School at Maddock in 1940.  He entered the Army on October 5th, 1942 and was honorably discharged on March 23rd, 1946 with the rank of Technician fifth grade.  Fred married Betty Gilbertson on October 9th, 1949 at Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock.    The couple made their home on her grandparents, Broten, farm in Viking Township. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2009. In addition to farming and a dairy; Fred operated a water well drilling and water conditioning business for many years.

Fred loved music.  He played in the grade school orchestra, sang on the radio and in the school choir at Harlow.  Freddie hosted orchestra members from Norway and played the mouth organ and accordion in an orchestra of relatives and neighbors called "The Friendly Five".  Over the years, he played the accordion at nursing homes, senior citizens clubs, various programs and funerals.  Fred participated in many Farmers Union programs.  He was also a 4-H leader for thirty-one years and chaperoned the 4-H exchange to twelve states.

A  member of Viking Lutheran Church, Fred had served as president, treasurer and as a trustee.  He was a member of the Robert Tovsrud VFW Post #757 of Harlow, the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post #123 of Maddock,  the Devils Lake Sons of Norway, the Toastmasters and was a former member of the Heimdal 55 Club.  He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, playing cards, cooking lutefisk, dancing, telling stories and the trip to Norway in 2002.  Above all, he loved every minute spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife:  Betty;  a daughter:  Bonnie (Rick) Benson and a son:  Howard Jacobson all of Maddock;  three grandchildren:  Jared (Jennifer) Benson,  Lorissa (Justin) Green and JoLynn (Nick) Fautsch;  seven great-grandchildren:  Tate, Chase & Lane Benson,  Colton, Jorja & Naomi Green and Lacie Jo Fautsch;  a sister:  Junice (Magnus) Lysne of Leeds, ND;  cousins:  Lillian Moran of Fargo, Doris Lysne of Harvey, Doris Christiansen of Montsana, WA, Robert Roed of Shoreline, WA and a number of cousins in Norway.

He was preceded in death by his parents;  brothers:  Harry, Alvin and Leonard Jacobson and a sister Mildred Jacobson.

To Betty: I send to you and your family my deepest sympathy. I have known Fred for a long time. I remember our days in 4-H, the times he came to our place to fix the water softener, and the great times visiting. Fred will be missed but he will live on in our hearts and minds forever. Betty,  I can't even begin to tell you of the fun filled times I remember with you and Freddie!  You both are so special to me and many others for the smiles you put on our faces and our hearts.  I will send a card and letter your way with a proper mememorial for Freddie.
