Garold Lavester Theise was born July 29, 1919, to William and Ella (Hillestad) Theise at Hamberg, ND.  He was educated through his sophomore year at the Heimdal Public School and graduated in 1938 from the Benson County Agricultural and Training School at Maddock.  Bud entered the US Army on January 29, 1942 and was sent overseas in May of 1942, where he served in the Military Police Corp in Puerto Rico during WWII.  He was discharged on October 15, 1945.  He returned home and farmed in the Heimdal area for 10 years.  He married Arlene Fossen on October 20, 1951 in St. Paul, MN.  The couple moved to Montana in 1957 and to Maddock in 1958, where Bud worked on farms and road construction for several years until becoming the Maddock Chief of Police, a position he held for 14years.  He continued working for the City of Maddock operating the garbage truck and city maintenance until retiring in 1986 with over 30 years of service to the city.  Arlene died in 1994.  He continued to live in Maddock and later spent a year at the Maddock Memorial Home until moving to the Med Center One Living Centers at Mandan in 2001.

Bud was a member of North Viking Lutheran Church, Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post #123 and the Sons of Norway all in Maddock.  He enjoyed gardening, TV sports, visiting with his many friends and in later years while living in Mandan, hearing all of news from the Heimdal, Maddock and Hamberg areas.  He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.  Bud had a very strong work ethic and felt you must put in a rigorous day of labor to earn your worth.
