Hazel Togstad Williams, 101, of Maddock, ND, went home to her Heavenly Father on Sept. 23, 2019, at St. Vincent's Care Center in Bismarck, ND after 101 years of earthy service. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, October 4, 2019 at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock. Visitation will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM followed by a 7:00 PM Prayer Service Thursday, October 3, 2019 at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock.  Burial will be held at the Albert Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Maddock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred in Hazel's name to the donor's choice.

Hazel was born July 9, 1918, on the home farm in Albert Township, rural Maddock, North Dakota. She was one of 11 children born to Lars and Matilda "Tillie" Togstad. Hazel attended Albert Township School No. 2 through eighth grade.

On Nov. 20, 1940, Hazel was united in marriage to Clarence J. Williams in Minnewaukan, North Dakota by Pastor Mathre. She enjoyed working and living on the farm with Clarence until his death in 1981. Hazel lived a full life as a loving wife, mother to four, and grandmother.

Hazel's faith journey began at Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was baptized and later confirmed. Immanuel continued to be an important part of her life where she worshiped and was a dedicated servant – teaching Sunday School, being part of Ladies Aid, and was often found in the church basement making egg coffee and serving many church meals. Hazel was a devoted member of the 114-year-old congregation until Immanuel's closure.

Throughout her life, Hazel spent many hours volunteering as a 4-H leader, fixing hair at the Maddock Memorial Home, and delivering for Meals on Wheels. She masterfully created quilts for friends, family, and Lutheran World Relief.

Hazel was proud of her family's military service and honored as a Gold Star Mother because of the sacrifice of her son Norman. She was involved in American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries, where she was often part of the color guard at high school athletics, parades, and veterans' services.

Hazel cherished time with her family – preparing holiday meals and playing cards and Rummikub. She attended countless activities and events of her extended family. Hazel was well known for her "Grandma buns," lefse, flatbread, and meatballs with gravy. She was skilled with a needle and thread, sewing clothes, patching countless overalls and jeans, and embroidery.

Her life and memory will forever be cherished in the lives of her children – Rodger (Marie) Williams of Maddock, ND, Donald (Kay) Williams of Bismarck, ND, Pamela (Robert) Nelson of Bismarck, ND; grandchildren – Paul (Maria) Williams, Mark (Rachelle) Williams, Annie (Aanen) Bergrud, Justin Williams, Ashley Williams, Jennifer (Mark) Erickson, Rachael (Tim) Flagstad; and 11 great-grandchildren.  Hazel is also survived by one sister-in-law, Verna Williams of Fargo, ND and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by husband Clarence, son Norman, and her parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Clarence, and son, Norman.
