Henning Jacobson was born October 14, 1924 at the home of his parents, Carl and Adele (Johanson) Jacobson in rural Esmond, ND. He attended school at the Hesper Consolidated school for 11 years and the Benson County Ag and Training school for one year where he graduated in 1942. Henning started farming at the age of 15 when his father bought a Ford tractor with a 3 point hitch and a 2-14s plow. This was a transition from farming with horses to a tractor. He farmed the land his father homesteaded around 1898.
Henning married Myrtle Smith in 1947 and they lived happily ever after. Together they raised 4 children: Lana, Lane, Lynne and Lee. The Jacobson's were member of the Swedish Lutheran Church, Vasa, until the merger with the Immanuel Church in 1958. Henning was a choir member as long as the choir existed. He also sang with the community choir and was sometimes a soloist. He and his wife sang duets, and they along with good friends, Harlan and Ethel Helgeson formed a quartet in the late 1950's.
Henning served on the Immanuel church board and was a chairman for a couple of terms. He served on the Farmers Union Oil Co. board for 12 years and served as chairman for part of that time. Henning served on the Benson County Farmers Union Board and was chairman of that board for 23 years. He was a member of the 5 State Farmers Union Marketing and Processing Board for 15 years and served one term in the N.D. House of Representatives. He was a member of the Elks club where he and his wife enjoyed dancing. He loved farming and upon retirement was an avid gardener.
Henning and his wife traveled to numerous states including Hawaii, and several countries such as Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland, the Soviet Union while on the Marketing Board and Kenya, Africa when their daughter and husband were in the Peace Corps. Henning lived on the farm where he was born until entering the St. Aloisius Long Term Care Facility in Harvey, ND. He led a full and productive life.
Henning is survived by his children, Lana (Mike) Venzke, Lane (Pam) Jacobson, Lynne (Sheldon) Wiger and Lee (Roberta) Jacobson; grandchildren, Kory (Colette) Boehmer, Ryan (Tanya) Jacobson, Janelle (Miguel) Swanson, Andrea (Max) Barabas, Brian (Leah) Wiger, Jen (Steve) Baxa, Luke and Kendal Jacobson and Katie Palacios; great grandchildren, Will, Aaron, Sam, Oliver, Isaac, Jada, Adra, Rylan and Elsie; brother-in-law, Lyle Smith.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife and dance partner of 70 years, Myrtle; parents, Carl and Adele (Johanson) Jacobson; siblings, Stella (Jacobson) Benson, Pearl (Jacobson) Mueller, Sonja (Jacobson) Ledgerwood, Lennart Jacobson and John Jacobson.
