Hjalmer Hermanson's Obituary
Hjalmer E. Hermanson, 97, of Maddock, ND, died Friday, September 10th 2010, at Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 18, 2010, 2:00 PM at North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Burial at 4:00 PM Saturday in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery at Harlow, ND. Military Rites will be accorded by the Robert Tovsrud VFW Post #757 of Harlow and the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post # 123 of Maddock. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7pm with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock. Casket bearers will be: Danny, Bradley & Nathan Hermanson, Gabe Kost, Jon Michael Rognlie, Curtis Kenner, Rodger Kenner, Douglas Brendsel, Duane Warner, Willard Westad and David Erickson. Honorary bearers will be: Magnus Lysne, Bernard Meyer and Delbert Bingham.
Hjalmer Edwin Hermanson was born June 7, 1913 in Butte Valley Township, near Harlow, ND, one of ten children born to Herman and Jenny (Alm) Hermanson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church, near York, ND. Hjalmer was raised and lived his entire life on the farm his mother homesteaded. During the depression years, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1936, serving in California and Colorado. Hjalmer was a World War II veteran, serving from 1943 to 1945 with the 341st Field Artillery Battalion, 89th Infantry Division, known as the "Rolling W". They crossed the Rhine River at St. Goar in March of 1945 to set up Camp Lucky Strike as their headquarters. He married Phyllis Rognlie on November 12th, 1948 at Minnewaukan, ND. The couple lived and farmed in Butte Valley Township and in 1967, won the North Central Soil Conservation Award.
Hjalmer was currently a member of North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock and a former member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Harlow where he held various church offices. He was a member of the Robert Tovsrud VFW Post #757 of Harlow and the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post #123 of Maddock. He served on the Harlow Elevator Board, Hathaway #22 rural school board, was a 4H leader and was active with the Farmers Union Local and Youth classes. Hjalmer collected and restored Coop tractors, gave advice and supplied parts to many other collectors. Hjalmer and Phyllis traveled extensively in the US, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and many other parts of Europe. They also attended many steam thresher reunions and shows in many states and in Canada. Hjalmer also loved trees and planted many over the years.
Surviving are his wife: Phyllis of Maddock; sons: Jon, Barry, Teran (Dawn) Hermanson all of Maddock and Robert (Lona) Hermanson of Fargo; a daughter-in-law: Mary Hermanson of Rugby; 5 grandchildren: Daniel (Rebecca) Hermanson, Kayla Hermanson, Bradley Hermanson, Katelyn Hermanson and Nathan Hermanson; step-grandchildren: Gabe Kost and Lindsay Kost; great-grandchildren: Cooper Hermanson and Kennedy Kost; a special "granddaughter": LinElla R. Pistol; nieces and nephews: Delores (Ret. Rear Admiral James) Foxgrover of Whidbey Island, WA, Noel (Connie) Abrahamson of Olympia, WA, Betty Watson of Las Vegas, NV, Donna (Bud) Meyer of Henderson, NV, John (Jack) Mandy of Spanaway, WA, Jean Mandy of Tacoma, WA, Judy (Tom) Horton of Bremerton, WA, Clayton Johnson of Sumner, WA; Jon Michael (Ann) Rognlie, many grandnephews and nieces; a last surviving cousin: Audrey Brendsel of Minot, ND and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Carrol and Joyce Rognlie of Devils Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Tanya Hermanson on January 10, 1999; a grandson: Mitchell Hermanson on October 23, 2005; a great-grandson: Gabriel P. Hermanson on June 3, 2006; his siblings: Regina Saue, Martina Abrahamson, Ruth Mandy, Eilert Hermanson, Oscar Hermanson, Ingvald Hermanson, Carl Hermanson age 4, Claris Johnson and Carl Hermanson.
