Ida J. Stadum, 94, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Esmond, ND, died Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake.  Funeral services will be Saturday, September 24, 2011,  2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Esmond, with Pastor Harold Ovre officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be Saturday at the church an hour before the funeral.  Her grandsons will serve as casket bearers and granddaughters as honorary bearers.  Music will be from Roger & Karen Hill and Margaret Toso, organist.

Ida Josephine Hanson was born in a log house about 12 miles east of  Williston, ND, to Andrew and Gena (Stokke) Hanson on December 17, 1916.   She attended 12 Mile Junction and Stoney Creek one room township schools through the eighth grade.  Ida then attended high school in Williston, staying with an aunt for a time and later working in a home for board and room while she finished high school, graduating in 1935.  Ida then came and stayed with her uncle Sigred Hanson in Isabel township before going to Devils Lake to begin nurses training.  It was here where she met her future husband, Arthur Stadum, a good friend of her cousin Sam.  Art and Ida were married June 12, 1938 at the parsonage in Williston, ND.

They moved to the Stadum family farm and engaged in grain and cattle farming until  moving to Esmond in 1970.  They operated the Esmond Locker plant until 1978 and continued to help for a time after retirement.    They enjoyed taking painting classes and traveling.  Ida was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, later Immanuel Lutheran Church and then at Trinity Lutheran Church, all of the Esmond Lutheran Parish.  She was active in Ladies Aid and also served as Sunday School Superintendent for a time.  Ida was also involved in Homemakers, and served as a 4H leader.  Art died December 3, 1990.  Ida remained at their home in Esmond for a time, later moving to the Park View Apartments in Maddock.  She became a resident of The Good Samaritan Home in Devils Lake in 2003 and lived there for most of the time until her death.

Ida is survived by four children:  Janice (Dee) Culp of Richland Center, WI; Gary (Terry) Stadum of Esmond; Eileen (Richard) Vetter of Esmond and Helen (Dave) Helm of Brandon, SD; 23 grandchildren; 64 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; and two sisters- in- law:  Ruth Stadum of  San Jose, CA  and Lucy Hanson of  Williston, ND.

She was preceded in death by her husband;   her parents;  two sisters:  Selma Hanson and Agnes Baustad;  a brother:  Selvin Hanson and 3 grandchildren:  Brenda and Sandy Culp and Davey Helm.

I'm so sorry to read of your Mom's passing. I have many wonderful memories of seeing your folks and you at many church activities. It's always hard to lose a mother no matter how old one is.
