Irwin Westby's Obituary
Irwin Westby, 91, of Maddock passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in New Rockford. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the North Viking Lutheran Cemetery. Casket bearers will be: Darwyn Kanzelman, Robert Kanzelman, Wayne Hipp, Rodger Benson, Duane Stadum, Lee Tollefson, Dean Markestad and Ivar Haugen. Music for the service was from Rachel Markestad, organist and soloist. The Nelson Funeral Home of Maddock is in charge of the arrangements.
Eugene Irwin Westby, son of Edwin and Hannah Westby, was born August 6, 1918 in rural Maddock, ND. He was both baptized and confirmed at North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock. After high school, he entered full-time into a life-long love affair with farming. He married Myrtle Kanzelman on January 27, 1971 at North Viking Lutheran Church. Together, they built a custom home in Maddock and enjoyed a full life of family, friends, work, and fun. They were very active in many community activities including: North Viking Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, Elks, etc. Favorite pastimes included: raising a big garden, traveling, fishing and camping, square dancing, and trying one's luck at casinos.
Irwin especially liked to watch T.V. sports: his favorite teams---the Vikings and Twins! He loved hanging out with family and friends--drinking coffee, eating pastries, and talkin' story. He took great pride in his family, home, and community.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle at the Lutheran Home, New Rockford, ND; a step-daughter Phyllis Meier, Portland, OR; step-son Darwyn (Faye) Kanzelman, New Rockord, ND; his sister, Esther Tollefson, Maddock; five step-grand children and 10 step-great grandchildren; his neice, Linda Ankeney, Auburn, CA; three nephews Lee Tollefson, Yorktown, Virgina, Norm Tollefson, Grand Forks, ND and Thom Ankeney, Modesto, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marion Ankeney; nephews Chuck Ankeney and Duane Tollefson; step-sons Erlin and Phllip Kanzelman; and step-grand children Michael Kanzelman and Bill Howard.
