Jamie Meghan Sorum, 37, of Churchs Ferry, ND passed away Monday, January 17, 2022 at her home.  Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the Assembly of God Church in Cando, ND with Pastor Michael Rohrer and Pastor Marty Tollefson officiating.  Jamie and her family were involved with an organization, which supports education for impoverished families in Nicaragua, and in lieu of flowers, donations are preferred in Jamie's honor to: Nicaragua Resource Network, 16162 Carey Rd, Westfield, IN 46074 or online at www.nicaresourcenet.org/donate

Jamie was born in Indianapolis, IN on July 28, 1984. She was adopted by Jim and Pat Sorum shortly after birth. She spent her early years in Carmel, IN, where she had many friends from church and her sports teams. Jamie was an avid volleyball and softball player and loved to read, write, and bake. Throughout childhood, Jamie and her family took road trips across the country, often camping, hiking, and having adventures. Every year, Jamie and her family went to Nicaragua to volunteer, where they loved spending time with dear friends and exploring the country.

Jamie and her family moved to Rapid City, SD when she was a junior in high school. While in her first year of college, she began to experience loss of motor skills and found herself facing mental health challenges. Soon after, Jamie was diagnosed with Huntington's disease. Through this process she learned more about her biological family and was able to meet her biological mother before she passed away from the same disease. Jamie also met her biological sisters and brothers, whose continued contact meant so much to her. Jamie faced her diagnosis with courage. She did not allow the disease to define who she was and became an inspiration to many. A family member, who was inspired by Jamie's fortitude in facing her disease, helped to make a documentary of Jamie's life called Why She Smiles . This provided Jamie the opportunity to tell her story and raise awareness about Huntington's disease.

Jamie was surrounded by her family – her parents, sister, and brother and his wife – who came together to support Jamie through her journey with her disease. Although Jamie eventually lost the ability to walk, use her hands, and speak, she still lived life to the fullest. Jamie traveled the country with her family, went sky diving, and swam with great white sharks. She never wanted to miss a party, and when she could no longer bake, she directed everyone else in the kitchen.

Jamie is survived by her parents, Jim and Pat Sorum of Churchs Ferry, ND, her sister Micah Sorum of Washington, DC and her brother and his wife, Jacob and Charlotte Sorum of Golden, CO. Jamie loved spending time with her grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends, and her life was full of celebrations with the people she loved. Jamie had a strong faith and understood that God's grace was sufficient for her journey.
