Obituary

Jean Tofsrud, 91, of Devils Lake, ND and formerly of Minnewaukan, ND passed away Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, ND. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Trinity Free Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan, ND with Pastor Luther 'Lu' Mathison officiating. Visitation will take place Friday, February 24, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service at the Nelson Funeral Home in Minnewaukan, ND. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Music will be provided by Deanna Hanson, Rhonda Gilpatrick and Rita Halvorson. Burial will take place in the spring at the Trinity Free Lutheran Cemetery in Minnewaukan, ND.

Jean was born at home near Rock Lake, ND on April 8, 1925 to Esau and Bessie (Fleming) Belt. The family later moved to the Warwick area. Jean started high school at Maddock but had to quit to help at home when her mother had cancer. Jean's family then moved to Devils Lake following the passing of her mother. Jean met Pete Tofsrud in Devils Lake and they were married in October 1944. The couple moved to a farm north of Minnewaukan and had two children, daughter Sharon and son, Ricky.

In November 1987, the family moved to Minnewaukan and Rick took over the farm. Jean and Pete went to Texas for many years in the winter time. Pete passed away in 1998. Jean continued to live in Minnewaukan until April 1, 2011 and moved to Devils Lake when her house was flooded.

Jean was a charter member of Trinity Free Lutheran Church and a member of Homemakers for several years. She enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, ceramics, playing cards and puzzles. Jean also loved to bake, cook and paint.

Jean is survived by her son, Rick (Kathy) Tofsrud; 5 grandchildren, Denise (Chad) Cichos, Chad (Sheila) Stoll, Heidi Esch, Ryan Miller and Andrew (Brittany) Tofsrud; 5 great-grandchildren, Megan and Chase Cichos, Cole and Caedon Stoll and Braxton Ailie; sister, Leah Tofsrud; sister-in-law, Marilyn Belt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Esau and Bessie (Fleming) Belt; husband, Pete Tofsrud; daughter, Sharon Esch; granddaughter, Sarah Tofsrud; infant sister, Alvina Belt; brothers, Lloyd, Kenneth and Russell Belt; sister, Faye Waldorf.
