John D. Scott, 83, of Maddock, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Manor Care, Minot, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 10:00 AM at St. Williams Catholic Church, Maddock, ND, with visitation one hour prior. Rosary at 7 PM and Vigil Prayer Service at 7:30 PM on Friday, January 16, 2015 at the St. Williams Catholic Church, with Father Brian Bachmeier, celebrant. Burial will be in Green Wood Cemetery, rural Maddock following the service.
John D Scott was born on February 8, 1931 to Robert & Dorothy (Van Stralan) Scott in Maddock, ND. He graduated from Benson County Agricultural Training School of Maddock; he then went on to complete 2 years at St. John's University of Minnesota, where he met Patricia (Patt) Poston. John and Patt were married June 7, 1952 in St. Cloud, MN, and made their lifetime home on their farm north of Maddock. Drafted into the US Army, John served in the Korean Conflict as a medic. After his discharge, John returned to farming. In 1960, he began working in sales for the Trojan Seed Company and later the Dakota Farmer Magazine. It was with the Dakota Farmer Insurance Company that John found his niche as a sales agent, earning the 'Top Salesman' award numerous times, plus other recognitions as well as trips. John and Patt founded & operated Mid Dakota Insurance. John retired in 2009, at the age of 78.
'Faith, family, and friends' is the way John lived his life. He was quick to offer help where needed, give hugs, offer smiles, tease and tell jokes; all of which brought joy to many. John and Patt were members of St. Williams Catholic Church, in Maddock, since its founding in 1954.
John is survived by daughters Kathy (Michael) Schimetz of Minot, ND, Nancy (Dan) Schulte of Sioux Falls, SD, Lynn (Jim) Langston of Wahpeton, ND, and daughter-in-law Marlene Scott. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, with another grandson on the way.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife
Patricia, and sons John, Steven, and David (Sam), aunts Margaret (Maggie) Engstrom and Florence Scott.
