Joyce A. Olson was born on May 22, 1932 to Edward and Ruby (Rehling) Motschenbacher in Josephine, ND. She came into this world a beautiful, caring and determined spirit. After losing her father, her family moved to rural Maddock at the age of three. She was raised on a farm, attended grade school in Isabel, ND and graduated in 1950 from Benson County Agricultural Training School in Maddock, ND.
On August 20, 1950 she married Rueben Olson in Sheyenne. They began their life together on a farm southwest of Maddock along the Sheyenne River Valley. They worked the land, tended their herds and raised three children. She resided there until Rueben's death in October of 1978. In July 1979, she moved to Maddock where she spent her time tending her gardens and loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joyce was a Sunday School Teacher at Klara Lutheran Church for many years, while also working at the Maddock Memorial Home and Maddock Café. She loved to work with flowers, gardens and fancy arts and crafts. Joyce exited this world the way she entered, as a beautiful, caring and determined spirit.
She is survived by two sons, Daryl (Val) Olson of Maddock and Ricky Olson of Max, one daughter, Cindy (Greg) Hegland of Sheyenne, six grandchildren, Jesse (Stephanie), Eric, Tyrel, Kyle (DeeDee), Michelle (Tyler) and Rachel, three great-grandchildren, Hadley, Taryn and Finn, four sister-in-laws, Cede Motschenbacher, Marlys (Odin) Fossen, Karen Meier, Lorraine Olson, Aunt Dot Hakanson, Uncle Donnie Rehling and several nieces and nephews.
