Obituary

Kathryn Duchscherer, 91, Carrington, ND, formerly of Minnewaukan, ND,  died Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, November 14th, 2013,  10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Carrington with Fr. Charles Leute, O.P. celebrant.  Burial will be 2:00 PM Thursday at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Minnewaukan.  Visitation will be Wednesday beginning at 6:00 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Prayer Service and Time of Sharing at 7:30pm all in the church. Casket bearers will be her granddaughters:  Leanne (Pat) Spooner,  Deanne (Duane) Landsverk,   Kristi (Eric) Buseman,  Jennifer (Justin) Beto,  Sarah (Thad) Score,  and Jill Duchscherer.  Honorary bearers will be her grandsons:  Kevin Wentz,  Kerry (Michelle) Wentz,  Kraig Wentz,  Kristin (Nita) Wentz, Dan Duchscherer, John (Jennifer) Duchscherer, Keith (Donna) Neis,  Kelly Neis,  Brad (Nancy) Neis,  Mike (Krystle) Neis,  Erik Huffman,  David (Anna) Huffman,  Jeffrey Haugen and Justin Haugen.  Music will be provided by Ron Bromley, soloist with Jennifer Hoornaert, pianist.

Kathryn Buckmeier was born September 8th, 1922 on the family farm south of Orrin, ND, the seventh child of Carl and Paulina (Schmaltz) Buckmeier.  She was baptized and made her first Communion at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Orrin.  Kathryn attended the View District #5 two room country school through the 8th grade.  She then helped her parents with the housework,   herding cattle and sheep,  shocking grain,  haying and milking many cows.  On October 28th, 1940, Kathryn and Paul Duchscherer were married in a double wedding ceremony along with her brother, Carl and Agatha (Dosch) Buckmeier at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Orrin.  The couple farmed, raised cattle and milked many cows in the Orrin, Silva and Knox areas before moving to a farm north of Minnewaukan.  They moved into Minnewaukan in the fall of 1955.  Kathryn worked at the Benson County ASCS Office for a time then at the Benson County Treasurers Office as Deputy Treasurer.  Kathryn and Paul also operated the Tastee Freeze in Minnewaukan from 1965 to 1970.  Paul passed away March 7th, 1994.  Kathryn remained in Minnewaukan until moving to Carrington in the fall of 2011 and just recently became a resident of Golden Acres Manor.

Kathryn was a member of St. James Catholic Church and Altar Society in Minnewaukan until its closure.  She then became a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Devils Lake and regularly attended mass at St. Jerome's Catholic Church at Fort Totten until moving to Carrington and becoming a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  She was also a longtime member of the Minnewaukan Senior Cizens.

Kathryn's greatest joy was spending time with family and friends.  She embroidered a set of dish towels for each of her children and grand children and enjoyed tending her plants, flowers and bird watching.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children:  Elsie Wentz of Lynnwood, WA,  Carl (Rose) Duchscherer of Lawton, ND,  Monica (Jerome) Neis of Carrington,  Mary Duchscherer of Fargo,  Pauline (Daniel) Huffman of Andover, MN,  Karen (Stacy) Haugen of Devils Lake and Dale (Deb) Duchscherer of Aneta, ND; 22 grandchildren;  36 great-grandchildren;  2 great-great-grandchildren;  brother:  George Buckmeier of Tawas, MI;  sisters:  Mary (Joe) Baresh of Seattle, WA & Pauline O'Brien of Grand Rapids, MI;  sisters-in-law:  Katie Olson of Harvey and Hilda Buckmeier of Bismarck; numerous nieces and nephews.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents;  husband:  Paul;  a son:  Bill;  grandsons:  Brett Paul Duchscherer & Brian Duchscherer;  great-grandson:  Kyle Wentz;  a son-in-law:  Jerome Wentz;  brothers:  Carl,  Stonas,  Mike, Ned and John Buckmeier;  sisters:  Josephine Lemar and Anna Pfeifer.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Kathryn, she was such a beautiful person with a beautiful smile,she never seemed sad and WOW to live to be 91 years which I believe she lived to the fullest. She was truly blessed. It is so nice to see my cousins live a long life.  I know she will be missed by all of you. I will not be able to attend the funeral or wake as I work on Thursday early morning. I will request a mass to be said for the soul of Kathryn and for her family at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lakota, where Carl and Rose attend Mass. It was so sad to hear of the passing of Aunt Kathryn. She was such a sweet person and was so proud of her entire family. My mom and I were so amazed at how she talked about each and every one of them down to the smallest detail, even in her 90's.
