Lannie James was born May 3, 1958 to Edwin and Eillen (Engkvist) Simonson in Maddock. He was raised and educated in Maddock, graduating from Maddock High School with the class of 1976. Lannie furthered his education, attending Lake Region State College in Devils Lake for one year, before resuming work with his uncle and father at home.
Lannie Simonson Building Company first got its start when Lannie's Uncle Douglas built a lumber supply business on his farm west of Maddock. Lannie took over the business in 1996, adding cabinet making to the company's prowess. In 1997, when it was obvious the business was outgrowing its facility on the farm, Lannie purchased five acres of land and built the first leg of the ever expanding business. He later added on a stain and varnishing facility to the shop and lumber yard. But it is what came after the building stage that branded Lannie's cabinets with a reputation of quality. His shop may have been in the middle of the prairie, but it was furnished with equipment that would have made the most pretentious or proud tool guru groan with envy. Lannie's strive for excellence in his work was obvious to all his loyal customers.
Lannie was active in basketball during his high school years. He enjoyed attending a variety of sporting events including baseball, basketball and hockey, played by his "kids." Lannie was also a long time member of the North Dakota Retail Lumberman's Association, consisting of retail and wholesale members from across the entire state.
Lannie is survived by his sisters, Laurie Simonson of Maddock, ND and Boni Simonson of Minot, ND; nephew, Devon Simonson; and several cousins, including, Diane Engkvist, Shari (John) Matusiak, Sophia Nancy Engkvist and Bob (Sherri) Engkvist.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Eillen Simonson; sister, Lori; numerous aunts and uncles.
