Leonard Johnson's Obituary
Leonard A. Johnson, 92, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Esmond, ND, died Thursday, October 10, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 17th, 2013, 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Esmond, ND, with Pastor Harold Ovre officiating. Burial will be in the Vasa Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond. Visitation will be Thursday at the church an hour before the service. Casket bearers will be: Cullen Johnson, Tyrone Johnson, Brent Olson, Alan Olson, Bobby Olson, Bruce Georgeson, Brock Georgeson and Robert Engkvist. Military Rites will be accorded by the Esmond VFW Post #4251 and the North Dakota Military Honors Team. Music will be from Pastor Harold Ovre, soloist with Karen Smith, pianist.
Leonard and his twin sister, Leona, were born November 1, 1920 on the family farm in Isabel Township, rural Esmond, ND. The son of Otto and Hannah (Paulson) Johnson, Leonard was raised on the farm, attended the Isabel School and farmed with his family until entering the US Army April 23, 1946. Following basic training and welding school, Leonard served with the 81st Ordinance Tank Maintenance Company in Korea as a welder and parts clerk. He was honorably discharged with the rank of TEC 4 on September 30, 1947. Leonard returned home and farmed with his brother, Arthur, until retiring in 2000. The brothers moved to Devils Lake in 2009. Leonard became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in April of this year.
Leonard was baptized and confirmed at the Vasa Lutheran Church. Following its closure he became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Esmond VFW Post #4251.
Surviving are nieces and nephews: Charolette (David) Peterson of Longview, WA, Bonnie Olson of Harlow, ND, Roxann (Bruce) Georgeson of Maddock, Cullen (Doreen) Johnson and Tyrone (Nancy) Johnson all of Fargo and several grandnieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Clarence, Albert, Harold, Donald and Arthur; sisters: Lillian and his twin, Leona; nieces: Lynda Schmaltz and LouAnn Johnson.
