Lois B. Barnes, 92, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Leeds, ND,  died Friday, March 7, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake.  Memorial Services will be Sunday, May 25th, 2014,  2:00 PM at the Nelson Funeral Home in Leeds with Pastor Richard Budd officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, rural York, ND.

Lois Borghild Sandven was born on the family farm in Beaver Township near York, ND on June 8, 1921, to K.B. and Elvira (Trandum) Sandven.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural York, ND and educated at the Beaver Township #2 rural school.  Lois graduated from the Leeds High School in 1939 and then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She was employed by the Department of Interior in Washington, DC and later returned to Leeds.  Lois was then employed many years by the Social Security Administration in Devils Lake, ND until her retirement.  She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center at Devils Lake in 2003.

She was a life member of St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural York.  During retirement, Lois enjoyed traveling, especially to Norway.

Surviving are sisters:  Eunice C. Sandven of Leeds and Rebecca (William) Hansen of Brainerd, MN;  a sister-in-law:  Dorothy Sandven of Eden Prairie, MN; a number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers: Olger, Kenneth & Roger and a sister:  Signe O'Keefe.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Lois's family.  I worked with Lois at the Social Security office in Devils Lake from 1975 to 1981.  She taught me a lot about Social Security which helped with my career with the Agency.  She always shared her knowledge of the surrounding communities which helped me as I took over the traveling to the contact stations.  She will always be remembered as Ms. Social Security! Going to miss Aunt Lois.  Back in the 70's I fondly remember her visits to my family (Roger Sandven) in St. Paul, at that time.  She would always take us shopping to Southdale Mall.  I know she was the ND Santa Claus on behalf of the North Dakota Sandvens!!  I think of beautiful fresh picked flowers off the farm when I think of Lois as well as lovely scarves that she used to wear.  As a young niece, I saw her as Mary Tyler Moore - fashionable, working woman with lovely shoes. I think of her and all the other Sandven's when I think of the Farm in Leeds/York, ND.  Many fond memories.  Rest in peace. Kris Sandven Dunn
