Lucille Kary (Schmid) Westby, 104, of Maddock, ND passed Monday, December 9, 2024 at Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, ND.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, July 18, 2025 at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor Cassie Borges officiating.  Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will take place at the North Viking Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Robert Tovsrud VFW Post #757 of Harlow 4915 50th Ave NE Maddock, ND 58348 or North Viking Lutheran Church 308 Central Ave Maddock, ND 58348.

Lucille Kary Schmid, daughter of Paul and Emma (Kanzelman) Schmid was born July 8, 1920 at Oberon, ND.  Baptism was performed January 8, 1922 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Oberon.  She was educated at the Minnewaukan Public School (graduating in 1938) and Minot State Teachers College.

Lucille and Clifford O. Westby were married on December 27, 1948 at the rural Minnewaukan farm home of her parents, by Pastor Tumo.  After their wedding they resided on the Westby family homestead on the south side of Maddock.

Lucille taught school one year at Russell (1941-42), three years at Egeland (1942-45), and 29 years and three months at the Maddock Public School (1945-75).  She taught the kindergarten class of 1980.  She did substitute teaching at Maddock from 1975-1992.

In 1955, Lucille was elected President of North Dakota State Horticultural Society.  Lucille was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post #123 of Maddock for many years, serving as treasurer for 11 years, secretary for one year, and president for nine years total.  She won several state awards and a national award for her reports on unit Americanism projects.

Lucille joined the Ladies Auxiliary to the Robert Tovsrud Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #757 at Harlow in 1976.  She served as President and state musician of both the VFW Auxiliary and the Sixth District.  She was a long time member of the Viking Homemakers Club and the North Viking Lutheran Church.

Lucille loved flower and vegetable gardening, taking care of her yard, traveling with Clifford, square dancing, music, and displaying her talent for the piano and organ.  Lucille stayed on the farm until the age of 98, when she entered assisted living at the Maddock Memorial Home.  At the age of 100, she entered Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Paul and Emma Schmid; husband, Clifford O. Westby; brothers, Donald, George and Gordon; sisters-in-law, Katherine, Annie and Ardys Schmid, and Hazel and Maude Westby.  She is survived by her four nieces and four nephews and their families.
