Lyda Constance Stave was born September 14, 1921 on the family farm north of Leeds, ND to Clara and Leonard Stave. She attended rural grade school and was a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church. After graduating from Leeds High School in 1939, she worked for area homemakers.
Lyda married Marvin Thompson in 1942 in the same house where she was born. She then joined the St. Petri Lutheran Church where she was active in Sunday school and the Ladies Aid group. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and Mollargutten Sons of Norway in Maddock, ND.
Lyda always had the coffee pot perking and enjoyed having people stop in to share her baked goodies.
Lyda and her mother spoke Norwegian to each other – especially when they didn't want the "kids" to know what they were saying! A highlight of her life was a trip to Norway – seeing the sights and visiting relatives.
A traditional Christmas Eve supper was lutefisk and meatballs. She even convinced her non-Norwegian son-in-law that lutefisk was pretty good stuff.
Lyda loved music and was a good dancer. She was especially proud of her family's musical talents – Marvin – violin, Clair and Judy –accordion and Dennis – guitar.
Marvin and Lyda lived on the "home Farm" south of York, ND until 1997 when they moved to Devils Lake, ND. After Marvin's death in 1999, Lyda moved to assisted living and then to Heartland Care where she enjoyed visiting with the staff and friends.
Lyda and her brother, Ernie Stave were honored in 2011 to be designated Hearland's King and Queen of the Devils Run Parade. They were all smiles as they rode in a convertible and waved to the crowds.
Lyda is survived by her three children: Clair (Patti) of Mentor, MN, Judy (Owen Randle) of Minot, ND and Dennis (Judy) of Fargo, ND; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; sister-in-law Phyllis Stave of Colorado and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marvin; brothers Sidney and Ernest (Eileen) Stave; sisters Goldie (James) Gilbertson and their son Larry; sisters-in-law Olga (John) Lokken, Bernice Huberty, Hazel (Harold) Berven, Alice Thompson, Myrtle (Lewis) Bokn and Lila and Eli Huffman.
