Magnus M. Lysne, 89, of Leeds, ND, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Trinity Medical Center in Minot. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, November 18th, 2013, at Leeds Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard Budd officiating.  Burial will be in the Leeds Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by members of the Robert Tovsrud VFW Post #757 of Harlow and Leeds American Legion Post #101. Casket bearers will be:  Michael Lysne,  Mark Lysne,  Dwayne Erie,  Greg Anderson,  Kory Jacobson and Gilman Gunerson.  Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7pm with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service and Time of Sharing at the Nelson Funeral Home in Leeds. Music will be from Dan & MiChelle Nybo.

Magnus M. Lysne was born December 12, 1923 on farm east of St. Petri church, rural Harlow, ND, the son of Martin and Mabel Lysne.  He was baptized at St. Petri Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Brinsmade Lutheran Church.  His father, Martin Lysne, came from Laerdal Norway at age 17. Magnus attended a country school until moving east of Harlow and attended school in Harlow.  He completed the tenth grade at the Hathaway school in Harlow and then joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) to help the family make ends meet.

Magnus enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 9th 1945 and was discharged on December 16th 1946. He received his training at Camp Hood, Texas and Medical Basic at Fort Lewis, Washington and from there was sent to South Korea during World War Two for one year.  Following his military discharge, Magnus worked at the elevator in Starkweather for 3 months and then to Harlow for 38 years, 36 years as manager of  the Harlow Co-op Elevator and Seed Co.  Magnus and Junice Jacobson were married on June 25th 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Maddock.  They lived in Harlow, ND until 1995 and then they moved to Leeds, ND.

Magnus was an active and much admired member of his community, serving on the boards of  Baker Electric Co-op, Heart of America Hospital, clerk of the Hathaway School and President of the Leeds School board. He was a founding member of the Robert Tovsrud VFW Post #757 of Harlow and had served its commander and quartermaster.  Magnus was also a member of the Leeds American Legion Post #101. Magnus was a former member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Harlow and had served as its president, Sunday school superintendent, teacher and a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood Men's Club.  Magnus was currently an active member of the Leeds Evangelical Lutheran church where he had served as president,  trustee and taught Sunday school.  Magnus was the first lay president of the Lake Region Lutheran Conference.  He could be seen driving his prized 1930 Chevy in almost every community parade, most recently at the Harlow Centennial. He enjoyed square dancing, woodworking, watching sports, especially the Yankees.

Loving family who shared his life include: wife of 63 years Junice Lysne;   children:  Judy (Alex Petterson) Lysne of Bloomington, MN,  David (Aida) Lysne of Thompson, ND,   Dale (Diane Loftus) Lysne of Plymouth, MN and Steve (Kari Kraft) Lysne of Minot; thirteen grandchildren:  Selma Petterson,  Hans Petterson,  Christine (David) Hooge,  Tara Lysne,  Davell Lysne,  April (Ryan) Lindell,  Ryan Lysne,  Emma Lysne,  Maura Lysne,  Ashley (Shane) Berube,  Nichole (Linn) Bjornrud,  Bethany Lysne (engaged to Ian Pena) and Madisyn Lysne;  9 great grandchildren:  Taylor Lysne,  Derek Baker,  Carson & Alison Lindell,  Brielle & Barret Berube,  Eila & Daymon Gray Bjornrud and Harlow June Pena;  a sister:  Pauline "Polly" Hovland of Great Falls, MT; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Magnus in death were his parents, an infant granddaughter Anna Petterson, brother  Julian "Jiggs" Lysne, a sister Marie (Neil) Wilder, half-brother Chester Nybo and a brother-in-law Warren Hovland.

Junice Jacobson Lysne. . .I read with shock in The Press about Magnus passing. Please accept my condolences. Just this past October, I visited the Harlow Elevator to pick up a check for some barley we sold. Then I got to meet Roxanne.  I have two Roxannes in my life; the other works for BTR.  The Harlow Roxanne insisted I replace my BTR cap with a Harlow Co-op cap.  Thanks again for coming to Mom's burial service in July of 2004.  As you may know, the McClellan grade school on the hill is gone. I remember the four of us sitting on "the recitation bench" to recite the alphabet, during which I always stumbled after the letter T.  Time moves on.  Often I think of you fondly. ...Richard Hofstrand
