Mavis K. Johnson, 90, of Heimdal, ND, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 16, 2026, at SMP St. Aloisius Long Term Care in Harvey, ND.  A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, at North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock, North Dakota.  Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mavis (Sogge) Johnson was born June 14, 1935, to Alfred and Marie (Olson) Sogge, on her parents' farm near Maddock, ND, where she grew up.  She attended grade school at the Eldon Township School and received her high school education at Benson County Agricultural Training School, graduating in 1953. Following high school, Mavis worked at the Farmers State Bank in Maddock. On August 1, 1954, she was united in marriage to James A. (Jimmy) Johnson at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan, ND. After their marriage, they lived on a farm west of Heimdal and, in 1959, purchased a farm east of Heimdal where they made their home and built a life together. James passed away on June 1, 2018.

Mavis was a devoted farm wife who was never afraid of hard work. She worked alongside her husband in every aspect of farm life—hauling grain, running the combine, putting up hay, and milking cows. Her strength, resilience, and dedication were evident in everything she did.

She found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. Mavis loved gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, baking, and crafts and she shared those talents generously with her family and friends. Her grandchildren quickly learned they could always find baked goodies in the freezer.  Mavis would frequently send homemade cookies and buns with them for the trip home.

She also loved music and enjoyed playing the piano.  She encouraged her children and grandchildren to take piano lessons and participate in the school band or choir.  On Sunday mornings, you could find Mavis playing the piano to pass the time while she "patiently" waited for Jimmy to get ready for church.

Mavis was a faithful member of Hoff Lutheran Church, where she served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and was active in Ladies Aid. She was also a 4-H leader and a member of the Maddock American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid Maddock Bobcat fan and received recognition from the Maddock Sports Boosters. If she wasn't watching from the bleachers, she was listening to the game on the radio.

Above all, Mavis cherished her family and was always a steady source of love and support. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  Even when faced with significant physical challenges, she adapted with grace, remaining present for those she loved.  Her quiet courage and enduring strength were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Mavis is survived and deeply missed by her children, Connie (Richard) Thomas of Castroville, Texas; Karen (Gregg) Smith of Esmond, North Dakota; and Aaron (Tamera) Johnson of Jamestown, North Dakota; 7 grandchildren, Cara (Craig) Reamann, Kelli (Darwin) Duzan, Jordan (Jayla) Smith, Kristen (Alex Brandvold) Smith, Ashton (Nora Duren) Johnson, Aubrea and Annie Johnson; and 10 great-grandchildren, Cole, Ryan, and Blake Reamann, Hadley and Harper Duzan, Collins, Cameron, and Colter Smith, and Elsie and Ivy Brandvold; and her sister, Eloyce (Gene) Gaffney of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, James; her parents, Alfred and Marie (Olson) Sogge; her sister, Solveig; and her brothers, Arne, Melvin, Floyd, Roy, Stephen, Lee, Gordon and Rodger.
