Nolan L. Halvorson, 69, of Minnewaukan, ND, died Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 4, 2009,  2:00 PM  at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan with Pastor Harold Ovre officiating.  Burial will be in West Minnewaukan Free Lutheran Cemetery later in the spring.  Honorary bearers will be:  Ray Buckmier,  Kenny Bonn,  Roman Rubbelke,  Dave Hagel and Jerry Eberhardt.  Music will be provided by Claudette Carlson, soloist with Deanna Hanson, organist. Visitation will be Wednesday at the church an hour before the service. The Nelson Funeral Home of Minnewaukan is in charge of the arrangements.

Nolan Lee Halvorson was born October 20, 1939 at Maddock, ND, to Fred and Agnes (Sinness) Halvorson.  He attended school through his sophomore year at Minnewaukan and then transferred to the Benson County Agricultural and Training School at Maddock, graduating in 1959.  Nolan then attended the North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton and graduated from the two year Auto Mechanics course.  He moved to Seattle, WA and worked as a mechanic at Boeing Aircraft Company until May of 1963 when he returned home to farm with his father.  He spent the winters of 1966 and 1968 working out of state and also worked a couple winters as a welder for Herman Manufacturing in Brinsmade.  He later worked for the Benson County Highway Department, Lunde Construction and Hulstrand Construction.   Nolan returned to farming in 1975 and also assisted with the gaming at the Maddock Legion Club and Devils Lake Elks Club.

Nolan was baptized at West Minnewaukan Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening and tinkering.

Nolan is survived by his daughters:  Janet (Steve) Axtman of Charlotte, NC and Angela (Alan) Goeser of Munich, ND;  grandchildren:  Tanner Axtman, Kelan & Tyler Goeser;  his significant other:  Karen Maier of Minnewaukan;  her children:  Greg Maier of Devils Lake,  Bobbie Maier (Doug Platzer) of Staples, MN,  Jason (Cammie) Maier of Beaumont, TX and John (Robin) Maier of Roswell, GA;  a brother:  Aldwin T. Halvorson of Williamsburg, VA and a sister:  Pamela Anne Mills of St. Paul, MN.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

I am so sorry to hear of Nolan's death. I enjoyed knowing him. When I broke my neck back in 1983, him and Karen bought me a shirt that stated "1983 has been a real pain in the neck." I will miss his wit. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and Karen. Pastor Jeff Wallace

Hello---We all want your family to know that we share your loss! Our families have been friends for a lot of years, with a lot of memories. From music contests, cub scouts, St. Peter church,I especially remember Nolan,s folks in church,raising our families together. You were there for us when we lost Laura Jo. Thank you for that. It is so sad that you have lost Nolan. Karen, Janis got ahold of me tonight and told me about Nolan. I am so sorry to hear he passed away. I am Lawrence and Norma Anderson's middle daughter. My memories go way back from when Janis was married to Lloyd Caine and Crystal was in the picture. Hope you and your family will pull together and deal with this loss together and know that God will bring you through. Again, I am so very sorry!

For my dear friend Karen & family; also Janet, Angie & family - I'm sorry I was unable to attend services for Nolan but have you all in my thoughts and prayers. Nolan came from a mold that must have broken when he was born - unique individual! I have soooo many memories of Nolan and the whole family that I often think about, mostly because he was such a great friend of my dad and really enjoyed and appreciated the farmhouse and garage that they both spent so much time in. I'm glad he is in a peaceful place.

Sorry to hear about the death of Nolan. He was a special man. The smile on his face, which he had all the time, always brought a smile out in others. Nolan will be missed by many. I wish the best for you Karen at this time of loss. Time doesn't make things heal, but it will help make it easier to deal with.
