Norma L. Long, 95, of Rugby, ND, formerly York, ND, died Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in a Rugby nursing home.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 14th, 2009, 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Rugby with Pastor Sharon Baker officiating.
Burial will be in the York Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7pm with a 7pm Prayer Service and Time of Sharing at the Nelson Funeral Home in Leeds. Visitation will continue Saturday at the church an hour before the funeral.
Active Casket bearers will be her grandchildren: Kraig Haugen, Kari Follman, Lisa Hammer, Brent Hammer, great-grandsons: Chad Haugen and Tyler Haugen. Honorary bearers will be great-grandchildren: Andrew Follman, Evan Follman, Olivia Follman, Haley Hammer, Hanna Hammer and Hayden Hammer. Music will be from Nancy Silliman, vocalist with Pam Anderson, organist.
Norma LaVonne Long was born May 5, 1914 at Wolford, ND, the eighth of ten children born to Benjamin and Mary (Opperud) Jacobson. She was raised there and graduated from the Wolford High School in 1934. Norma worked for a time at San Haven in Dunseith prior to her marriage to Galen Long on November 24th, 1937 at Leeds, ND. The couple farmed north of York until his death on September 18, 1959. Norma moved to Cando, ND and worked as a cook at a drive inn. In 1961, while working, she completed a Licensed Practical Nursing course by correspondence and then worked at Rest Haven Manor in Cando until retiring in 1976. Norma moved to Rugby in 1991 and lived for a time at Haaland Manor and later at the Haaland Home. She then spent the last ten days of her life at Southview Estates Senior Living in Rugby.
Norma was baptized and confirmed at the Wolford Lutheran Church and was a long time member of the York Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid in York. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards, reading and sports. Norma's favorite past time was following her grandchildren's many activities.
Norma is survived by two daughters: DeEtt (Donald) Haugen of York and Donna (Eugene) Hammer of Fargo; four grandchildren: Kraig (Mary) Haugen of Rugby, Kari (Michael) Follman of York, Lisa Hammer of Coon Rapids, MN and Brent (Janet) Hammer of Farmington, MN; eight great-grandchildren: Chad and Tyler Haugen of Fargo, Andrew, Evan and Olivia Follman of York, Haley, Hanna and Hayden Hammer of Farmington, MN; a sister: Helyn Simpson of Olympia, WA; a sister-in-law: Myrtle Jacobson of Havre, MT; and number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1959, a son: Royce LeRoy Long in 1944; a granddaughter: Kyle Armstrong; brothers: Jacob, Gerhard and Pershing "Bud" Jacobson and sisters: Alpha Bowersox, Beaulah Dungan, Evangeline Staff, Luella Thomas and Evelyn Lipp.
