Obituary

Robert I. Hunter, 101, of Maddock, ND passed away Saturday, May 8, 2021 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND with family at his side. Robert was born February 25, 1920 to Roy and Elsie (Clifton) Hunter in Maddock. He graduated from Maddock High School in 1937, attended Moeller Barber School in Fargo and engaged in the barbering profession with his father until 1942, when he served in the United States Army for four years during WWII. Following his discharge, Robert resumed his barbering career in Maddock, eventually adding the sale of hunting and fishing equipment to the business. On June 19, 1943, Robert was united in marriage to Marie Liudahl at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN. To this union, the couple welcomed three children, Judy, David and Linda.

During Roberts 70+ years as a businessman in the community, he served for 12 years on the Maddock City Council, five years on the school board and has been a member of the American Legion for over 75 years. As a member of North Viking Lutheran Church, he also served terms on the board of deacons and board of trustees. Robert also served as Judge on the Benson County Election Board for numerous years.

Hunting had always been a passion of Roberts since the time he waded the sloughs with his father. He enjoyed playing Solitaire, reading the Fargo Forum from cover to cover and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Fishing had intrigued Robert in later years, and many friends and neighbors have benefitted from his lifelong enjoyment of gardening.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Linda (Jeff) Ellingson of Maddock, ND; 6 grandchildren, David (Reggie) Miller, Jonathan (Tracy) Miller, Allison Hunter, John Hunter, Scott Hunter and Noah (Amy) Ellingson; 4 great grandchildren, Naomi Miller, Jacob Miller, Paige Miller and Soren Ellingson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; parents, Roy and Elsie Hunter; son, Dr. David Hunter; daughter, Judy Miller; a sister at birth and sister, Evelyn at 10 years of age.

In lieu of services, the family is respecting Robert's wishes to be cremated and given back to the earth amongst his most cherished hunting grounds that he walked with his father, son and grandsons.
