Obituary

Ruth L. Rangen, 103, of Devils Lake, formerly of Maddock, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.  Funeral services will be Monday, October 26, 2009, 11:00 AM  at North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating.  Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Maddock. Visitation will be Monday at the church from 9am until the time of service. The Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock is in charge of the arrangements.  Casket bearers will be her great-grandchildren:  Kasey, Karlee & Kirby Kallenbach,  Colt, Clancy & Hayley Rangen,  Gabe, Laine & Tyann Adams.  Music will be from Carl Gilbertson and Rachel Markestad.

Ruth Lucille Rangen was born September 1, 1906 near Mayville, ND, to Lars and Lotta (Sagen) Aarhus.  She attended school in Mayville and came to the Maddock area to teach at the Lynner School in North Viking Township of Benson County, ND.  Ruth married Thingvold Rangen on June 2, 1928, at the parsonage in Minnewaukan, ND.  To this union, a son, Harold was born.   The couple farmed in near Maddock until moving to Devils Lake in 1957.  Ruth worked various places until 1962 when at the age of 56, she received her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree from the Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake.  Ruth worked at Mercy Hospital and the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake.  The couple moved to Jamestown in 1964, where she worked at the State Hospital.  They returned to Devils Lake in 1972.  Thingvold died July 20, 1994.

Ruth was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and its Women's Missionary Federation and a Sunday school teacher for many years.  Upon the closure of the church she became a member of North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock. Ruth was an avid reader, expert seamstress with the flair for making her own patterns, an excellent carpenter and painter and also enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law:  Leola (Glenn) Davidson of Maddock;  a grandson:  Jeff (Pam) Rangen of Bismarck;  two granddaughters:  Kristin (Tim) Kallenbach of Maddock and Shauna (Wade) Adams of LaQuinta, CA;  special great-grandchildren:  Kasey, Karlee & Kirby Kallenbach,  Colt, Clancy & Hayley Rangen,  Gabe, Laine & Tyann Adams.  She was preceded in death by her parents;  husband in 1994,  son in 1972;  four brothers:  Peter,  Hilman,  Ole and George Aarhus and five sisters:  her twin, Ruby Satrom,  Inger Kittleson,  Karen Skarperud,  Leone Stoa and Dina Bergene.
