Ruth Schlieve, 95, of Leeds, ND passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Good Samaritan Society - Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake, ND. Visitation will be held Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Nelson Funeral Home in Leeds, ND from 5:00PM to 7:00PM with a7:00PM Prayer Service. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 11:00AM at the Leeds Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Pretzer officiating. Burial will be held at the Leeds Lutheran Cemetery.

Ruth Theodora Bue Schlieve passed away on her birthday, July 23rd, 2015 at Lake Country Manor in Devils Lake, where she resided for the last several years. She was born July 23rd, 1920 in Pekin, ND to Ella & Oscar Bue. She was reared and educated in Leeds, graduating salutatorian from Leeds High School in 1938. She attended NDSU in Fargo, and then transferred to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a degree in Public Health Nursing. Following graduation, she was employed as a Public Health Nurse in Thief River Falls, MN. In later years she worked as a nurse and an X-ray technician in the Johnson Clinic in Leeds.

Ruth's dedication to God, country, family, and community were reflected in her actions not just her words. She worshiped and served God through her church in the following ways: teaching Sunday school, serving as a deacon, as a member and officer of LLCW, and singing in the triple trio and choir. Besides serving God through her church, she instilled her Christian values in her family.

Serving her country as a nurse in WWII, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in December of 1944 and took her basic training at Camp Carson, Colorado. She proudly served with the 316th General Hospital in Manila, The Philippines, and the 122nd Station Hospital in Moji, Japan. She was honorably discharged in 1946. Following her discharge she worked as an office nurse for Dr. Cady in Minneapolis, MN. Patriotism continued to be important to her throughout her life.

She married Charles Edward Schlieve in Leeds, October 1st, 1948. They were happily married for 46 years and blessed with six children.

Her love of family was reflected daily through the sacrifices she made to not only rear 6 children, but also provide love and guidance to her 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Providing valuable lessons in sewing, baking, gardening, and camping were just some of the ways she showed her love.
Patience, compassion, honesty, humility, and respect were virtues she displayed and passed on to her children and grandchildren.

In her community, Ruth was more action than talk. She volunteered many hours to better her community and its citizens. She was a life member of the Leeds American Legion, Post 101, where she served as commander for two years; a life member at the Harlow VFW Post 757; and a charter member of the Leeds American Auxiliary where she had served as president, treasurer and secretary. She also was a member of the Alfredian Club; the Modern Mrs. Homemakers Club, and the Leeds Golf Auxiliary.

As the founder and leader of Girl Scout Troop #5 in Leeds, she influenced the lives of many young women; teaching them flag etiquette, camping skills, homemaking skills, and respect for self and others. She was the first neighborhood chairman of Prairie 4 Neighborhood.

She was an avid reader, not only reading for her own enjoyment but also reading to others. She enjoyed embroidery work, golfing, baking, gardening, camping, and volunteer work. Her sense of humor brought joy to her family at their many gatherings. In the community her humor will be remembered from performances as "Hilda" to Oleda Fogelson's "Sven" in their many comedy acts.

Survivors included six children and their spouses: Charles (Lizette) Schlieve Jr. of Lorton, VA, Jo (Charlie) Bott of Billings, MT, Elenore Sledge of Houma, LA, Susan (Jim) Braun of Leeds, ND, Mary (Tom) Hornbacher of Harrison, AR, and Andy (Jim) Deano of Houma, LA.
She was blessed with 14 grandchildren, Amanda (Dennis) Lynch, James (Maggie) Bott, Angela Bott, Andrew and Jessica Sledge, Jennifer (Tim) Mutchler, Luke & Ross Braun, Erica & Dillon Marchus, Ruth & Eve Gautreaux, and Dylan & Alice Deano; great-grandchildren include Caleb Tonning, Lily Sledge, Cameron & Mason Comeaux, and Evelyn & West Mutchler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her two sisters, and two brothers.

On June 27th, 2015 she was honored with an early birthday celebration with friends and family from all over the United States. Memories were created that will last a lifetime.

Her family is comforted by the thought that she and Charlie are dancing to Hank Williams on that heavenly dance floor in the sky.
