Ruth Smith's Obituary
Ruth Smith, 83, of rural Esmond, ND, died Friday, October 14th, 2011, at the Heart of America Medical Center Long Term Care in Rugby, ND. Memorial services will be Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 7:00 PM at the Nelson Funeral Home of Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Vasa Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond. Music will be from Joann Bergrud, soloist with Karen Smith, organist.
Ruth Smith was born August 14th, 1928 at Devils Lake, ND, to Alfred E. and Ida C. (Galant) Swan. She attended grade school and high school in St. Louis, MO and college at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Ruth was employed for a number of years as the assistant manager of the Poor Corporation grain terminal in Jamestown, ND.
She was once married to Harold Starkey. Ruth married Floyd Smith on February 2, 1978, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Esmond. The couple made their home on his grandfather's farm East of Esmond. Ruth worked as a bookkeeper for a number of area businesses through the years.
Ruth enjoyed gardening, puzzles, sewing, cooking and fishing in Canada. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Jamestown.
Surviving are her husband: Floyd of rural Esmond; 2 grandsons: Noah Medlar of Minot, ND and Ira Medlar of Wahpeton, ND; 2 great-grandchildren: Trent and Zoe Medlar.
Preceding her in death were her parents; step-mother: Lucille Swan; a daughter: Deborah Starkey in 2004 and a brother: Al Swan in 1998.

Hi Floyd and family - I am so sorry to hear about Ruth.Im sure you dont know me, but I used to own the Office Bar.Ruth would stop in to see me on a parts run or a dental appointment. She would come in with her Taco John food, have a Diet Coke and of course a couple of smokes with that funky filter.Made her cigs seem 4 feet long. Floyd, you came in one time with her and she introduced us. When I first met her, she asked me how old I thought she was and I thought MAYBE 65. She chuckled, Deb Im 72. OMG You are so 60ish. I want to be like her. Lived life to the fullest. I will miss her so much. Im so sorry for your loss. Deb Nelson
