Shirley M. Westby, 86, of Maddock, died Friday evening July 8, 2011, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND under the care of Presentation Hospice. Private graveside services were held Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Clear View Cemetery, rural Maddock with Pastor Debra Lommen, officiating.   Casket bearers were:  Lanny Fossen,  Susan Fossen,  Billy Fossen,  Melissa Fossen and Patrick Fossen.

Shirley Mae (Olson) Westby was born July 1, 1925,  the  second child of 11 to Ingvald and Florence Olson of rural Sheyenne, ND.  She was baptized and confirmed at Grandfield Lutheran Church, rural Sheyenne and attended schools in Eddy County.  Shirley married Ralph Westby on January 11, 1947.  They resided on a farm near Maddock.  He passed away January 24, 2010.  She remained on the farm until entering the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd January 2011.

Shirley was a member of North Viking Lutheran Church and its WELCA and the Women's Missionary Federation of Zion Lutheran Brethren Church in Maddock.  She enjoyed baking cakes for weddings and birthdays or other special occasions and assisted with the farming activities.  She was an avid Iditarod fan.

She is survived by a daughter:  Susan (Lanny) Fossen of Maddock; grandson:  Billy (Melissa) Fossen of Maddock and Patrick Fossen of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  She so enjoyed her two great-grandchildren: Logan and Ella Fossen;  a brother:  Eugene Olson in Washington;  sisters:  Faye (Darwyn) Kanzelman and Margaret Gudmunson all of New Rockford, ND,  Virginia (Terry) Braathen of Tolna, ND, Marlys Peterson in California, LouAnn Carlson in Washington; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; brothers:  Ernest, Loren & James Olson and a sister:  Lily Westby.
