Solveig C. Hvinden, 95, of Maddock, ND, passed away Friday, December 21, 2012  at St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey, ND.  Memorial services will be Wednesday, December 26, 2012,  1:00 PM at North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grand children and the members of the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post 123 of Maddock.  Music will be from Roger Hill, vocalist with Rachel Markestad, organist. The Nelson Funeral Home of Maddock is in charge of the arrangements.

Solveig Christine Sogge was born April 13, 1917 in Kristiansund, Norway, the daughter of Alfred and Marie (Olson) Sogge.  At the age of four, she immigrated with her family to the United States settling in the Maddock and Minnewaukan areas.  Solveig married Oscar "Toby" Hvinden on February 15, 1939 in Minnewaukan.  The couple farmed in the South Viking Township and also near Cathay, ND for a time.  Solveig worked as a CNA at the Maddock Memorial Hospital and at St. Michael's  Hospital in Grand Forks.  She also worked as a homemaker for Benson County Social Services for a number of years.  Toby died December 24th, 2003.  Solveig has been a resident of St. Aloisius Medical Center Long Term Care for the last six years.

Solveig was an active member of North Viking Lutheran Church and its WELCA, a member of the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Auxiliary and 55 Club in Maddock, 4H and  a member of the Silver Haired Legislative Assembly.  She enjoyed singing, writing stories and poems,  crafts,  playing cards and most of all spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her children:   Marlan (Nancy) of Thompson, ND,  Gerald (Nancy) of Thompson, ND,  Larry (Ginny) of Watson, MN,   Ardyce (Mrs. Byron) Ellingson of Heimdal, ND;  Robert (JoAnn) of Lakeville, MN,  Danny of Williston and David (Denise)  of Bismarck;    22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren,  3 great-great-grandchildren;  siblings:  Gordon (Darlyne) Sogge of Northwood, ND,  Mavis (James) Johnson of Heimdal, ND,  Eloyce (Gene) Gaffney of Detroit Lakes, MN,  and Roger Sogge of Maddock; a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents;  husband:  Oscar;   son:  Douglas in 2008; great-grandson:  Alexander Cole Hvinden;  brothers:  Arne, Roy, Melvin, Floyd, Stephen and Lee Sogge.

Hi Marlan and family members of Solveig Hvinden.  Mothers are oh so precious...a part of us from birth until the Good Lord calls us home...and then there is some separation, but we must have faith in the promise of Jesus Christ, our Savior, that one day we WILL all meet again.  I share your grief even if I did not know Solveig personally....I am sure she was a loving, caring person.  An individual born across the pond in the Old Country but reared on the prairies of North Dakota, and then to live a full and complete life in our beautiful state.  She has gone to the other side...forever light...forever joy and forever remembered.  In this Christmas season I can relate to your pain and sorrow, as I buried my own mother on Christmas Eve, 1979.  This time of year is full of many wonderful memories.  May the Child of Bethlehem bring you all a full measure of peace and love during this difficult time.  Dewey Oster



My deepest sympathy to all of you with the passing of Solveg. She was a wonderful lady & a privledge for me to know. Peace to her memory. I know personally how hard it is to lose someone at holiday time ,but just think she got to be present at Jesus' birthday bash. I do know & remember how she liked to have fun. My condolences to the Hvinden family on the death of your dear mom.  My knowledge of her goes way back to my 4-H days in Benson County.  (I was a Lallie Ag. member; now age 68!).  Also she was such a wonderful caregiver and support for many older persons.  You certainly will have many fond memories of her.  Rodger Wetzel (originally from Oberon)



Your mom was a wonderful lady.  She helped my mom and dad many times, plus she was a good neighbor in Maddock.  They also had many good times together.  I remember her telling some interesting stories about my parents at their 50th Wedding Anniversary.  She will be missed. Rachel Bergsgaard Rudel
