Sylvia Sundet's Obituary
Sylvia Camilla Nyland was born in Eldon Township, Benson County near Minnewaukan, ND on June 14, 1910 to Karl and Kristine (Olso) Nyland. She was baptized in the West Minnewaukan Free Church by Pastor J.P. Leeland and was confirmed in Calvary Lutheran Church in Oberon. Sylvia moved with her family to the Oberon community in the early 20's. She married Melvin Lysne in 1927 and to this union was born a son: Robert. In 1935 Sylvia was married to Carl J. Sundet at North Viking Lutheran Parsonage in Maddock by Pastor G.R. Estrom.
The couple traveled Benson County for a time while Carl worked for the Benson County Highway Department. They started farming in North Viking Township in 1939 and were both active members of Viking Lutheran Church. Sylvia moved into St. Aloisius Senior Housing in 1998 while Carl was a resident in the St. Aloisius Medical Center Long Term Care. He passed away in November of 1998. Sylvia spent much of the following two summers between Harvey and their farm near Maddock.
Throughout the years she busied herself with baking, gardening, canning and embroidery work. In later years she enjoyed playing games to pass the time. Sylvia remained in Senior Housing in Harvey until late September 2008 when she moved to Golden Acres Manor in Carrington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, two brothers and three sisters. Surviving are her daughter-in-law: Helen Else of Jamestown; grandchildren: Larry Lysne (Sheila Dufford) of Fairbanks AK, Glen Lysne (Jenine) of West Fargo, Susan (Jim) Bond of Jamestown and Jo Lysne (Kevin Beach) of Carrington; 10 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

As a great-niece of Auntie Sylvia, many wonderful childhood memories were created on the Sundet farm. My mother, Fern (Prichard) Reifers, Sylvia's niece, shared the Maddock childhood home with my sisters (Ginny & Patty) and me with enormous pride. There are some great stories with Uncle Carly and the farm animals that we still laugh about today. It was a time of pure childhood, great family fun, and cherished memories. Nancy (Reifers) Diamond

My family came to Maddock many times to visit my Mom's Prichard family relatives, and each of those visits included time with my mother's dear Auntie Sylvia and Uncle Carly. As a city-raised child I was fascinated by their farm . . . the machinery . . . the animals . . . the open fields . . . and the warm and friendly kitchen. I remember Sylvia as always calm and in control, yet playful and quick with her jokes. Auntie Sylvia was a fiercely independent woman in her quiet and unassuming way. Great Aunt Sylvia-Mary, Brenda and I were finally coming to see you in June to help celebrate your 103rd birthday. We were saddened to hear about your passing from Aunt Anna Mae. We are still coming anyway to Maddock in June to say goodbye & remember the good times we had as kids on your and uncle Carly's farm and at grandma Inga's and Uncle Irvins house.
