Verna L. Johnson, 98, Maddock, ND passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock, ND with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren: Michael Harris, Christopher Harris, Jennifer Johnson and Jeremiah Johnson. Music will be provided by Rachel Markestad. Burial will be in the North Viking Lutheran Cemetery, Maddock. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Maddock Memorial Home.
Verna was born September 7, 1916 in Heimdal, ND to James and Hilda (Iverson) Olstad. They moved to Maddock in 1925. Verna was confirmed at North Viking Lutheran Church in 1931 and graduated from Maddock High School in 1935. She worked for Dr. Bousquet and Dr. McKeaque before moving to Minneapolis, MN, where she worked as a seamstress for the Jean Lang Dress Co. Verna married Carl G. Johnson in Minneapolis on December 19, 1942. They moved back to Maddock in 1946 and started Johnson Electric.
Verna enjoyed sewing, quilting, bowling, painting, playing bridge, and putting puzzles together. She was an active member of a Homemakers club and WELCA. She served on the steering committee for North Viking's 75th anniversary and on the history book committee for their centennial celebration. In 1967 Verna started working at Nottestad Red Owl. She retired in 1979.
Verna is survived by her daughter: Barbara (Manuel) Harris of Jamestown, ND; son: Douglas (Lyn) Johnson of Elburn, IL; grandchildren: Michael Harris,Jamestown, ND, Christopher Harris, Fargo, ND, Jennifer Johnson, Sycamore, IL, and Jeremiah Johnson, DeKalb, IL; brother: James Olstad, Loveland, Co; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters: Inez Landt of Oakland, CA and June Westby, Salinas, CA, sister-in-law: Marian Olstad, Loveland, CO.
