Violet I. Smith, 92, of Maddock, ND, died Sunday, March 28, 2010, at the Maddock Memorial Home.  Funeral services will be Thursday, April 1, 2010,  2:00 PM, at Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Esmond with Pastor Harold Ovre officiating.  Burial will be in the Vasa Lutheran Cemetery later in the spring.  Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4 to 7pm at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock and Thursday at the church an hour before the funeral.

Violet Irene Erickson was born February 19, 1918 on the family farm in Isabel Township, rural Esmond, ND, the daughter of Alex and Carrie (Anderson) Erickson.  She was raised there and educated at the Isabel School.  Violet married Oscar Smith on November 10, 1938 at the Vasa Lutheran Church.  The couple farmed in Isabel Township until moving to Maddock in 1971.  She cleaned at the Maddock Legion Club and cooked at the Maddock Memorial Home for many years.  Oscar died June 13, 1991.  She lived in her own home before moving to the Parkview Apartments and recently became a resident of the Maddock Memorial Home.

Violet was a member of Vasa Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid until its closure.  She then became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the WELCA.  Violet loved to bake, especially lefse, bread, buns and flatbread.  She enjoyed offering coffee and goodies to everyone that came to her door.  Violet also enjoyed crocheting,  sewing, gardening and flowers.

Surviving are a daughter:  Donna Smith of Bismarck;  sons:  Marvin Smith of West Fargo and Ronald (Donna) Smith of Maddock;  5 grandchildren:  Eric Smith,  Mike Smith,  Todd Smith,  Denise Howell and Susan Graber;  5 great-grandchildren:  Ashley Smith,  Cy Dahlen,  Hanna Dahlen,  Austin Graber and Caden Graber.  She was preceded in death by her parents;  husband;  sisters:  Elvira Stam,  Clara Larson and Edith Johnson;  brothers:  Edward Erickson,  Vernie Erickson and Albert Erickson.
