Due to the weather, Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Sunday, December 18, 2022 at the Trinity Free Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan, ND, followed by a luncheon. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Wilma "Maxine" Yri, 93, passed away peacefully with family by her side at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, ND on December 8, 2022. Due to the weather, Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Sunday, December 18, 2022 at the Trinity Free Lutheran Church in Minnewaukan, ND, followed by a luncheon. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Wilma Maxine Newcomb was born at home on February 17, 1929, in rural Riggen Township, Benson County. She was the first of nine children born to Roy and Amelia (Holtz) Newcomb. In 1936 the family moved to rural Minnewaukan where she attended Minnewaukan Elementary and High School, graduating in May 1947. Post-graduation Maxine attended the summer session at Minot State Teachers College, and she taught at a rural Minnewaukan school.

Maxine married Victor Yri at the Lutheran Parsonage in Minnewaukan on June 13, 1948, and they moved to the farm by Stony Lake. To this marriage seven children were born: Carol, Vicki, Curtis, Dale, Arthur, Vernon, and Libby. In addition to raising a family, Victor and Maxine raised small grains, Hereford beef cattle, and milked a herd of Holsteins. Victor passed away January 3, 1980.

Over the years, Maxine was dedicated to her community. She was treasurer of the Aurora School District, and she served as a Sunday School teacher and as the Sunday School Superintendent at Stony Lake Church. She also served as an officer of West Bay Homemakers, as a Sunday School teacher at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, and was a member of both the Trinity Women's Missionary Fellowship and the Minnewaukan 55 Club.

In her retirement she enjoyed senior bus trips with her friends and, as always, had a passion for gardening and nature. Throughout her life Maxine loved her family most of all. She was especially fond of Christmastime, and regularly poured her heart into making lefse, potato klub, rosettes, and krumkake. Year-round, however, Maxine was known for her famous donuts, and she continually fulfilled people's requests for them within the community.

Maxine is survived by her children: Carol (Doug) Eriksmoen – Grand Forks, Vicki Walker – Grand Forks, Curt (Terry) Yri – Maddock, Dale (Linette) Yri – Minnewaukan, Arthur (Diane) Yri – Okinawa, Japan, Vernon (Kamara) Yri – Bismarck, and Libby (Scott Meske) Gravning – Bismarck. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Stan Johnson, sister Audrey Wagner (Wayne Griesel), brother Aaron (Marlys) Newcomb, sister Crystal (Bob) Maier, 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Victor, son-in-law Brian Gravning, parents Roy and Amelia Newcomb, brothers Wade and Joseph, sister and brother-in-law Hazel and Leonard Crouse, sister Clele, brother-in-law Gerald Wagner, and brother and sister-in-law Rolf (Wendell) and Marie Newcomb.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Minnewaukan Cemetery Association (P.O. Box 161 Maddock, ND 58348), the Maddock Memorial Home (301 Roosevelt Avenue, Maddock, ND 58348), or charity of your choice.
